Dr. Kwaku had to handle all class activities single-handedly since Isidra had to travel unexpectedly due to death in the family, so there was no Black History Quiz or Class Photo taken. However, here is the winner from the previous week. Congratulations to Patrice Chialusia Obienu, winner from Week 4!

Not to worry, we will take one during our last class, so come camera ready!

Don’t forget, we have moved the last class. Here’s a message from Dr. Kwaku:

Our next class, which is our last, will be held at the Ladera Park Community Center, 4750 62nd Street, (first block west of La Brea Avenue). It is the same place we conduct the adult Afrikan World Civilizations Classes.

During the last class, we will have one more lesson, and each registered student will receive a certificate of completion. We will also have some wonderful prizes for our no-cost raffle for the adults including a gift basket from Organic Root Stimulator and KJLH (thanks to Rochelle Lucas), and our regular student prize of a free meal for two at the marvelous Simply Wholesome Health Food Restaurant.

Our grand prize (all qualify) is a DNA kit from African Ancestry Inc., in Washington D.C. Since we all want to know where our family ancestry originated from on the continent of Afrika, the winner will know exactly where their place of origin and cultural group on the continent of Afrika, on the matriarchal side of the family.Check the website for prices…this is a valuable gift! www.AfricanAncestry.com

We look forward to seeing you there.

There is so much beauty and soul in the Motherland that the media never seems to show you. Thank goodness for those of you who go and share your photos and videos. There is also the Africa Channel, which serves up a great diet of balance and beauty. Plus, there are scores of movies you can order from Netflix that show movies that are more realistic.

We are not saying that there are problems. There are, and Africa needs out help. But Africa can teach us an awful lot. I cringe when people say they want to go to Africa to go on Safari. You wouldn’t come to Los Angeles and start looking for possums or coyotes or raccoons. Yes they are here, but that’s not all that is here.

So what is the Africa you don’t see? It’s the faces, the culture, the relationships, the art, the fashion, the music, the rhythm and more. Anyone who visits Africa and hangs with friends there, will be pleasantly surprised to see the way they do the things they do.

I have invited two former students: Akuete Kpodar (Togo) and Tosin Williams (Nigerian) to share their childhood traditions, and culture. We will have a slide presentation and a brief demonstration of mudcloth and back-wrapping babies, and the students will break into two group (girls and guys). They will then talk to these students to ask them any questions.

We begin by viewing a presentation about The Golden Stool, which is a Ghanaian tradition.

So, please plan to join us and thank you so much!

Isidra Person-Lynn

Host, Sunday Morning Live

Congratulations to our Winner from last week: It was her first time visiting the class but she took notes and paid attention! She won a dinner for two at Simply Wholesome on Overhill and Slauson in Los Angeles.

What’s on tap for Black History 4 Young People this week?

9 July Intra Color Prejudice & The Lost Generations of Australia

One of the most destructive elements in our community, which began in slavery, is the dark skinned/light skinned split within, causing families and friends to be divisive against each other. We will get at the heart of this problem, and hopefully prevent it from happening within the families and friends of class members.

We will also look at the “Lost Generations” of Australia, and how being mixed caused thousands of children to be separated from their families. Remember, bring something to write with and write on to take notes. Part of our task is to sharpen academic skills.

Join Us!

Until we meet, take your children (or your parents if this is a student reading this) to the library or a local bookstore and begin the journey. Are the interested in sports? There are many biographies to choose from of their favorite athletes. Are they interested in video games? There are writings about blacks in technology and gaming. Challenge them to Google these creative souls. If you want to interest them in medicine, the story of Dr. Ben Carson is classic.

Interview your family elders and learn your own personal family history and how it related to historic events. History has wonderful stories and lessons and you can never read all the books or hear all the stories…there is always something new.

During the summer, we opt for oral history and do not require papers to be submitted, but many parents do, and that can be an excellent idea– if not used punitively. We do encourage note-taking and I teach them how to write excellent papers.

And as they read, challenge their spelling, and their vocabulary. Encourage them to write in cursive…a dying art. Too often COLLEGE students cannot read my comments that are written on their papers, if they are written in cursive.

And if they are glued to technology, there are many phone apps that can help them. A computer favorite for spelling is www.SpellingCity.com. You can help your son or daughter ACE their spelling tests and learn meanings of words through this fun, free site.

Please share your favorite educational sites!

Talk to you soon,

Greetings!

February was a jam packed African American history month, but we continue right along in March because we know that Black History is 365 24/7! We are living it, and making it and learning it and teaching it!

For whatever reason, the PDFs we created for you to download just would not cooperate so we are posting them here. (Some like to have their forms filled out in advance):

Class Flyer: AWCFLYER11 Please print and help us spread the word!

Registration Form: RegistrationForm

Class Schedule : AFRIKAN WORLD CIVILIZATIONS Class Schedule

While all of this information is on www.DrKwaku.com, we know PDF’s are more convenient. Feel free to share!
