This week is our final class!  The parents and families of all students are invited.  We always host the last class at the Ladera Community Center, 4750 62nd Street, Los Angeles, CA (Just South of Slauson at La Brea and 62nd Street.)  Same time: 10 a.m. til 12 Noon.

 

-Week 5: Tour of Leimert Park and Students: Are you ready for your screenshot?

This week, the class will take a tour of Leimert Park Village, the historical location for Black Los Angeles. During the tour we will visit Eso Won Books. Some of the students mentioned they have never visited a Black-owned bookstore. This will be their opportunity to observe the vastness of books written by Black authors. We will also go over techniques for receiving A’s on tests and exams in school, as well as how to conduct research. We will also touch on the recent the Emmet Till controversy and the Trayvon Martin controversy.

Please note:  Next week’s class (3 August) will be conducted at the Ladera Community Center, same time 10 a.m. til Noon. Students will be given a notice with the address as a reminder to give to parents.

Week 4 Black History 4 Young People: The Afrika You Don’t See, Black Colleges, & Youth and the Law

Guest lecturers Atty. Jaaye Person-Lynn and Isidra Person-Lynn will take the reins of Black History 4 Young People, Saturday, July 20, 2013, 10 a.m. til Noon.  The topics include: The Africa You Don’t See, Black Colleges, True Life 10 Years Out of High School and Youth and the Law. NOTE:  Actor and family friend Michael B. Jordan took this pic with Jaaye and Isidra after a recent screening.  Jordan is starring in this powerful film titled Fruitvale Station, about Oscar Grant, slain by Oakland Police.

The general perception of Afrika centers on thick forests (known as jungles), wild animals and safaris. To the surprise of many, Afrika has some of the most modern cities and homes in the world. Isidra Person-Lynn, video journalist and educator, will show those, Afrikan customs, symbols and more. This is an eye-opening experience. Attorney Jaaye Person-Lynn will expose legal areas young people should be aware of from protesting and simple infractions and misdemeanors to serious felonies. He will also explain the importance of attending a Black college and its benefits. Don’t miss this very important class.

BH4YP Week 3: Colorism-Do we still discriminate within the race?

BLACK HISTORY 4 YOUNG PEOPLE ~ 3333 W. 43rd Place, Los Angeles, CA (Near Crenshaw and Vernon, across from the Park, near the Vision Theater) Saturdays, 10:00am – Noon.

One of the dire results of slavery is how it divided Black people by color complexion. The dark skin/light skin division caused friends and families to oppose one another in very disastrous ways. We will look at how this developed and what slave owners did to amplify the problem to their advantage, and its affects today.

Dr. Kwaku will also show a display of Black art and photography many have never seen. He will also give each student his highly requested article: “Getting A’s On Exams,” as well as a vintage Black History Calendar titled Heritage: 365 Days of the Black Experience, donated by author/educator Deloris Holt. They are from a previous year, but are chock full of important history dates which don’t change, and are for reference only!

This impactful class will be remembered for a long time to come.

Your Act of Kindness is Appreciated: Finally, after class last week, while students were waiting for parents to arrive, we were down to three students.  I want to publicly commend  Kendal Lake, who although she was chatting with a friend, while her father was talking to Dr. Kwaku, reached out to chat with another student who was standing alone.  We love it when selfless students help us foster a positive community here at Black History 4 Young People. Class #2 July 6, 2013: Beyond 1492: We Came Before Columbus

This Saturday we will cover the Americas like nothing students have ever seen. We will begin with a graphic lecture by Dr. Ivan Van Sertima on the Olmec civilization, the first civilization in the Americas. Next, Dr. Kwaku will deliver a very powerful lecture on the earliest American civilizations, as well as cover what people of Afrikan descent have created and accomplished in early and present day America. Our students will not be exposed to this information in their educational training, so they will be ahead of the game in American history.

29 June  | BLACK PEOPLE AROUND THE WORD

One of the mysteries in education is what Black people around the world have accomplished, their contributions to world history, culture, science and other important elements in human development. This will be an eye-opening experience for young people.

6 July | HISTORY OF BLACK PEOPLE IN THE AMERICAS

A.) Dr. Kwaku will present a rare lecture/graphics demonstration on Blacks in American history pre-dating the entrance into the Americas by Europeans.
B.) A presentation by Dr. Ivan Van Sertima (video) showing various categories of evidence demonstrating that Afrikans were in the Americas before Columbus and helped establish America’s first civilization.

13 July  | HIP HOP CULTURE

A.) A history of the development of hip hop culture.
B.) Dr. Kwaku will present the rich tradition of Black Art and Photography students are rarely exposed to.

20 July | THE AFRIKA WE NEVER SEE, THE NATURAL HAIR MOVEMENT, THE LAW FOR YOUNG PEOPLE & BLACK COLLEGES
